Messages from The Olympic WWW Server Administrators

You have probably already noticed that The Olympic WWW Server has got a FAQ. The FAQ addresses general questions regarding the Olympic WWW service. This file, at the other hand, is intended for short important messages from the server administrators to you.

A short summary of the "WWW Meets The 1994 Winter Olympics" project is now compiled.

The Games ended today, but we were not able to make any images from the closing ceremony, sorry for that - it is weekend you know! It has been two exciting and interesting weeks. Norwegian athlets have been very successful in their hunt for gold and glory, and LOOC and Norway has been at least as successful as the organizing committee and host country respectively.

We at Oslonett like to think that the "WWW Meets The 1994 Winter Olympics" has been successful too, at least given the preparation we were able to put into this project and the number of positive emails we have got from all over the world.

This modest success is encouraging, and we will definitely try to offer similar WWW based services in the future. What you will see and when you will see it, is not quite certain yet, but things will of course be properly announced.

To be able to make future services functional and optimal to you as a consumer, we could need your opinions on what you have seen in the "WWW Meets The 1994 Winter Olympics". We encourage you to spend a couple of minutes of your time, and answer a small questionnaire.

Just to demonstrate the power of WWW, we will provide a couple of audio clips from interviews etc. These audio files may be automatically linked into result files as with the image files.

There are only a couple of days left of The 1994 Winter Olympics, and Oslonett wish to thank you all for the positive feedback we have received during these two weeks. It has been fun to do this project, and we hope to offer similar services in the future. Hopefully, we will have the time to plan and design these services so that they will appear even more functional to you. All experience gathered through the "WWW Meets The 1994 Winter Olympics" will be used in the design of future services, but we would appreciate more feedback from you. Hence, we wrapped up a small questionnaire with a couple of questions which we urge you to answer.

I'm on Lillehammer watching women's 30 KM CC today. Images from todays events will not appear until tomorrow in the image archive, sorry for that.

For those of you who wonder why the Sun and Skrivervik company logos have been removed from the results pages: IBM and LOOC (Lillehammer Olympic Organizing Committee) didn't want those company names tied to the results from the Winter Olympics in any way! For the moment, I don't want to say more on this, but stay tuned!

The Olympic WWW server has now been running for more than a week, and the success of this service has been tremendous. As a courtesy to Oslonett and the other involved parties, we kindly ask foreign visitors to drop us an email if you see any information on this service in the media in your country. Like NCSA is doing with Mosaic, we try to collect what the media says about The Olympic WWW Server.

If you find anything, drop us a note on oslonett@oslonett.no.

The 64k line between Oslonett and the commercial Internet backbone was upgraded to 128k today. Thanks to the Norwegian PTT - the clue was to mention the word "Winter Olympics" ..

After we moved the WWW server from the SS2 to the SS10, the WAIS engines stopped working. They do work now however! Please tell us if you still have problems.

Just a short message in Steinars absence: The mirror site at sun.com appears to be working fine now and is updated continuously. Please use this if it is closer to you than Norway is.

There are still some problems with the mirror site at sun.com. We are working on it - US users, please feel free to use the server in Oslo until the problems are fixed.

There will probably be no GIFs from tomorrows events - I'll be doing some skiing myself this weekend. Hope to catch the events after Noon on Sunday.

We moved the WWW service from the SS2 to a SPARCstation 10 today. We have encountered no problems so far, please tell us if you have! Name servers around the world will eventually point you to the new machine, provided you are using the URL http://ol.oslonett.no/historie/OL/OL94.html to reach us. We are able to see slightly more throughput because of the SS10, but the network between Oslonett and the NSF backbone is currently the bottleneck. The good news is that the 64k line will be upgraded to a 128k line on Monday 21th!
